January Article- Lake Mac Jewfish

January brought a change of pace for the Reggies FHS crew, trading reef edges for the deeper holes and structure of Lake Macquarie in search of one thing, mulloway.

Conditions weren’t exactly ideal. Wind pushing across the lake, messy boat control, and tough filming conditions made it one of those sessions where everything feels harder than it should. But that’s part of it and exactly the kind of day that makes it worth sticking it out.

Teaming up with Slappin Tails for the mission, the plan was to stay committed to the lure bite and trust the process. The Vibing C**T was the lure of choice, worked slowly through deeper holes and along drop-offs where jewfish tend to hold during the day.

Despite the rough conditions, the crew kept at it short drifts, repeated passes, and making sure the lure stayed in the zone as long as possible. It wasn’t pretty, but it was effective.

While Zak and Oscer were busy filming and trying to line everything up for the shot, the moment finally came. Mid-retrieve, working the Vibing C**T tight to the bottom, it got absolutely smoked. No tap, no warning just a solid hit that loaded the rod and had line peeling instantly.

Classic mulloway behaviour.

What followed was a proper fight. Heavy head shakes, slow powerful runs, and plenty of tense moments trying to keep control in the wind. After a solid battle, the fish finally came boatside, a quality Lake Mac jewfish and a well-earned reward for grinding it out in tough conditions.

It was one of those bites that makes the whole session. Cameras rolling, chaos on deck, and everything coming together at the right time.

The Vibing C**T once again proved why it’s a go-to for this style of fishing, getting down quick, holding depth, and putting itself right in front of fish that don’t want to move far for a feed.

Not every trip is clean or easy, but this one showed exactly what can happen when you stick it out, trust your gear, and stay focused.

That’s summer fishing, and that’s what it’s all about.
